Kanelbullens Dag and Imbrogliare

Some of you have asked what the deal is with the name of the blog. "Inte Bulle" is an English play on two Swedish words. Inte means "not" and bulle is the Swedish sweet roll that is devoured in mass quantities by the Swedish populace, usually with coffee. Bulle is pronounced BULL-LA, hence the play, "no bull (la)" or "no bull". As the blog is my honest thoughts on current events or whatever else is rattling around upstairs and, as I quickly became addicted to those little sweet rolls, no bull seems to fit as a fun title. The reason for that explanation is today is Kanelbullens dag or Sweet Roll Day. Every bakery, coffee house, food store is selling these treats at massively reduced prices. So eat up, fans! When you visit here you will soon be stuffing your face with these delights like I do.

I have a few thoughts on the Foley Follies as they are unfolding. And I will preface them with this caveat. I do not condone the behavior of any of the participants in this sordid tale of the foibles of the human flesh. My first thought is my god, man, what were you thinking? Foley had to know that this kind of activity would be known and be subject to exposure. Are the members of the ruling elite so insular that they feel untouchable? From this incident it would be apparent they most certainly do.

The culture of this country must change to one of tolerance. As long as there has been man walking the planet, there have been men and women attracted to their same sex. Homosexual behavior may not be comfortable with you, but homosexuals cannot change their feelings anymore than you can for being a heterosexual. We just are. To force people to live their life as a lie to protect their families, the ability to live a productive life and themselves is wrong. And there is no correlation between Foley’s actions and his being a homosexual. It would have been just as wrong if the messages had been sent to a young woman.

To portray a Senate page as some babe in the woods may be the way to spice up a story but it would not be honest. The young adults chosen to be a page are usually highly motivated, intelligent and mature people. They want to be pages to further their own careers as potential future leaders of the country. Destined to become lawyers, captains of industry and, yes, politicians, these teenagers are no naive dummies. They are National Merit-smart enough to know that by having been a page looks good on a college résumé, and the connections they make guarantee entrance to the elite Universities. Foley may be connected, but a 52-year guy to anyone that age is certainly not attractive. Seriously, do those responses sound like some cowering child not realizing what is going on? The pages are mature enough to live away from home for months at a time. They certainly are mature enough to know feeling right from feeling wrong. Ask Bree Van de Camp.

Why must we be subjected to the reasons why. You were exposed (pun intended), humiliated, found to be a liar, forced to resign and apologize for your actions. So why, days after the embarrassment, do we have to listen to your excuses why? I never had a priest try to come on to touch me in some way I didn’t want him to. But I’ve been seriously drunk in my life a few times, and it never caused me to communicate with teenaged boys to talk about their penis size. Or grab a gun and shoot up the people in a post office or hold captives in a school. To the next one caught up in some scandal, and there surely will be somebody, just slink off somewhere and go away. Disappear, get lost and get out of our sight. Do the apologist and excuse giver think we are going to go and give them their position back? We care what you did, but not why or the reason why.

Is there a person in a position of leadership in this country going to step forward to do the right thing because it is the right thing and not because it will gain a few polling points or placate the constituency. The old saying about dogs and fleas seems to be apropos in the last few decades. The leadership of both sides of the aisle is complicit in this disgrace. To say they didn’t know about Foley’s proclivity is a lie. To not have done anything about it is disgrace.

The political pundits who speculate about the political implications just don’t get it. Would this be any less sleazy if it came to light the day after the election. This is not about votes, and the people of the country could not give a rat’s ass about how it equates to some political loss or gain. This isn’t Marty Schottenheimer sitting on a 2nd half lead. The people of this country are incensed that the supposed leadership of their country puts self-interest in front of what’s right. They are upset because protecting turf comes before protecting the country. They are upset because, the upholders and protectors of the law put themselves above the standards they hold us to.

Finally, shame on us for being too lazy to ask, probe and care about who we want to represent us. We slouch on the couch, holding the crack pipe of our society, the TV remote and vote for the guy with the best sound bite presence. You get what you ask for, people.
